My Legacy

My 2015 Speech

The 21st century and in the past

Talofa my name is Pela Tiata and I am hear to talk to you about what changes from the past to the future.

I am a 21st century learner. Back in the olden days the teachers were very strict, the teachers were the boss, they told us what to write down with a limited time.

Now in these days in the future it’s been changed. We get to question the teachers, we get to learn whatever we want, learn wherever we want and yeah also now this world is using digital technology like phones, I pads, tablets and much more.

In my opinion, 21st century style of learning  is  better, you are able to do things you weren’t allowed to do before due to technology, using technology has helped us a lot with our learning, we get to use the tool spell check to correct our spelling. You can share your learning with others to get feedback and advice from others.

The purpose for going to university or going school is to follow your passion, love what you do, get a good education and to prepare you for life.

Here are some tips of why we have technology 24/7.

  1. Technology helps us to access our learning tools/resources, share our learning, connect with experts learn.
  2. We can take our technology wherever we want like for e.g in the past they had to learn the same things in the same class , at the same time and had no technology, but now we can learn with other classes and use our chrome book and take it anywhere we want.
  3. We get to learn in lots of different spaces inside, outside, library and also different classroom with our technology.

Isn’t the future amazing well yes of course it is. What I will say is from now on walk towards your future and accomplish what you want in life .  Thank you!

How and Why I shone at Kapo Kapo

I shone at Corinna school’s Kapo Kapo 2015 at The Arena. Heaps of school’s from Porirua came down to perform their amazing dance and there amazing songs.  When I walked up on that stage my heart started pounding and my knees started sharking.

I shone when I self-managed really well on stage because I put a lot of effort into my performance. I am proud of myself because when I get nervous I decide to step out my comfort zone and to take a risk by facing my fear on the stage in front of people.

I shone by smiling and doing the pukana all the time. The important thing to remember is the actions and the words. When we do the wrong actions we will let Corinna school down and it will be embarrassing for us.

Another time that I shone at Kapo Kapo was when I was representing Corinna school by participating and contributing in Corinna school’s Kapo Kapo and always trying my best and never giving up.

I felt very proud of myself when I shone at Kapo Kapo because in my opinion I think I want to do Kapo Kapo all the time.

The Day I Went to Jerry Collins Funeral

I felt very proud when I was chosen to go to Jerry Collins's funeral.

We had to be very respectful because we were representing Corinna School and our family.

Kapo kapo Learning Story

On Tuesday night, the 23rd of June we had Kapo Kapo. It was packed at Te Raupara Arena, and it was dark too.I really enjoyed being on the stage in front of heaps of people. It made me feel very proud to represent my school and my culture.

I was scared when I first went on the stage, but then I got use to it and tried my best.

The skills that I used on the stage is going hard out and always using sharp actions, pukana and smile when you need to.

It felt like I was living a dream. It felt so nice to be on that stage and performing in front of heaps of people.

Every time when there is a song to pukana then you have to pukana and if its to smile then we had to smile. That's what I learnt in Kapa haka and at Kapo kapo.

Here is a link to the video of Corinna School at Kapo Kapo: Corinna School at Kapo Kapo (Te Rauparaha Arena)

Kapo Kapo was really fun because you can get to perform in front of people and also because heaps of people are cheering for you and others.

Pela's Kapa haka Learning Story

In Kapa haka I have been Learning to use sharp action's,go hard out when I'm doing the haka, Pukana or smile when I need to but most of all be disciplined. I away's listen to Whaea Clair and what she is saying. I can follow her instruction's quickly and respectfully.

I have to do sharp actions and not stick out. It is important to give everything you got because people will see that you are enjoying yourself and love being on stage.
On Tuesday the 23rd July, I went to Kapo Kapo for kapa haka. I gave it my best and enjoyed myself. It was scary at first when I was walking on stage because I could see everyone’s eyes were on me! But after a while I started to feel proud that I was representing Corinna at kapo kapo.

When someone is talking and distracting me I just tell them that they need to be disciplined. It is important to listen to Matua David and Matua Todd because he is telling us more about the Maori culture and why we should feel proud that we are in kapa haka. I remember Matua Todd telling us that back in his days if he didn't put his arms straight or do the pukana in the haka, Someone will come around and whack him, so he would put his arms straight and do the pukana in the haka. Matua Todd said we were lucky that no one came around and whacked us but instead we have to be told to the pukana in the haka.
It's been a pleasure being in kapa haka because it makes me feel clam. It’s like doing zumba but when it comes to haka you have to give it all your best.

My next steps for me is to not stop doing the pukana when I need to and also always try to smile through the whole show even if I am feeling nervous or scared.
